How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 107480 for steel wire and barbed wire in packages, including galvanized, painted, tinned, acid-coppered, or aluminum/brass/bronze/cadmium/copper-coated types; list Class 50 on the BOL.
- Package tightly: roll coils, cap sharp ends, and sheath barbs; wrap with heavy kraft plus stretch film and VCI where needed; strap to a 48×40 pallet with edge guards to prevent punctures.
- For barbed wire, add a protective outer sleeve and top/bottom sheets so barbs don’t snag adjacent freight; label as Sharp Edges and make loads stack-stable when possible.
- Protect finishes in transit: keep dry, avoid corrosive cargos, and note special variants like aluminum barbs for clear dock handling and faster inspections.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 50 delivers low per‑pound LTL rates for dense steel wire, trimming transportation costs versus higher‑class alternatives.
- Simple, fixed class (no density calc) speeds quoting, reduces reclass risk, and helps avoid billing disputes or delay charges.
- Damage prevention from proper capping, wrapping, and palletization cuts claims tied to barbs and sharp ends and preserves coated finishes.
- Clean labeling and palletized packages move smoothly through cross‑docks, reducing accessorials like rewrap, non‑conveyable, or handling surcharges.
