How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack composition fire starters or kindling in sturdy corrugated boxes or secure crates with a moisture barrier liner to keep contents dry and contained.
- Palletize on 48x40 skids with no overhang; interlock cartons, add corner boards, and apply stretch wrap and two straps for stable stacks.
- Print the BOL description as: “Kindling or Fire Starters, composition, NOI, dry, NMFC 107900, Class 55” and mark shipment as non-hazardous.
- Separate from liquids, fragranced goods, and dusty cargo; use a top sheet to prevent debris and protect retail-ready packaging.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Class 55 rating helps secure competitive LTL rates while allowing efficient cube utilization through safe stackability.
- Non-hazardous status eliminates hazmat surcharges and specialized paperwork, reducing total landed cost and transit friction.
- Simple, non-density classification minimizes reclass risk and speeds quoting, audits, and TMS setup across multiple lanes.
- Boxed or crated packaging reduces claims from moisture or abrasion, supporting consistent on-time delivery to retail and distribution hubs.
