How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the item fits: boxed visual teaching or visual management kits and simulators that are non‑optical. Note “subject to Item 170” on the BOL to match the NMFC wording.
- Calculate density correctly: weigh the full box (including dividers and manuals), then measure outside L x W x H in inches, convert to cubic feet (÷ 1,728), and compute pounds per cubic foot for the class selection.
- Pack mixed components to stop movement: use foam trays, partitions for boards/panels, and bag small pieces. Keep the box rigid with double‑wall corrugate so the cube stays true for density.
- If shipping multiple kits, unitize on a pallet with corner posts and stretch wrap, avoid overhang, and label each carton “Visual Teaching Kit – NMFC 108520 – Boxed.” Add liftgate or inside delivery when shipping to schools or training rooms.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based pricing lets you lower freight spend by improving pack-out to raise PCF, which can qualify for a lower class within the 50–400 scale.
- Accurate labeling (“boxed,” non‑optical, Item 170) reduces reclass fees, inspections, and delays—clean paperwork protects quoted LTL rates.
- Sturdy, right‑sized cartons cut damage on mixed-content kits, minimizing claims and replacement costs for training programs and project rollouts.
- Consistent carton dimensions streamline rate shopping and carrier selection, improving predictability for recurring shipments to campuses and corporate sites.
