Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
109000.00 LAMPS OR LIGHTING GROUP: Articles consist of Lamps, Lanterns or Lighting Fixtures, or Parts Named, as described in items subject to this grouping.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Use NMFC 109000 to locate the specific named lamp, lantern, fixture, or part entry; the final freight class is assigned at the item level, not this group header.
  2. Package fragile components like glass shades and bulbs separately in double‑wall cartons with foam-in-place or molded inserts; remove bulbs and secure cords and hardware.
  3. For larger fixtures (e.g., 12‑light chandelier or tall floor lamp), crate or palletize upright, cap the base, add corner protection, and label Do Not Stack and This Side Up.
  4. Call out materials on paperwork—glass, metal, plastic, LED assemblies—and note packaging (carton, crate, pallet) to help carriers verify the correct named-item classification quickly.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate grouping under NMFC 109000 speeds quoting and prevents reclass fees by guiding your team to the correct named-item entry.
  • Right-size packaging for fragile lighting reduces damage claims and return costs, improving delivery performance for retail installs and jobsite schedules.
  • Clear item/material details shorten carrier inspections, reducing delays and accessorials tied to inspections or OS&D handling.
  • Consolidating multiple small fixtures on a single pallet improves handling efficiency and can lower LTL minimum charges per delivery.
