How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density per Item 170: weigh the packed piece (box, crate, or NMFC Package 1289/817), measure cubic feet, and list lbs/ft³ on your quote.
- Protect fragile components like globes, diffusers, lenses, and shades with foam-in-place or corrugated partitions; crate chandeliers or long fluorescent housings to prevent flex.
- Secure electronics and lamps: bag ballasts/transformers, cap tube ends, coil string/rope lights with ties, and ship patio/tiki torches empty and upright.
- Palletize with no overhang for bowls or shades; label as “Fragile Glass” and name the part (e.g., Louvers, Refractor). Note packaging type and count on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating rewards compact packaging, helping lower class and reduce LTL rates on bulky fixtures and kits.
- Accurate part naming (globes, louvers, refractors) and approved NMFC packages minimize reclass fees and inspection delays.
- Damage-cutting methods—double-wall boxes, corner protection, or crating—slash claim risk for glass and finished metals.
- Non-hazardous lighting components avoid hazmat surcharges, streamlining carrier acceptance and improving transit reliability.
