How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use tight, leak-resistant packaging such as lined gaylords, sealed pails, or heavy cartons secured to pallets; band or stretch-wrap to contain fines and sharp edges.
- Write on the BOL: “NMFC 110410 – Lead Scrap, NOI, in Packages, Class 55 (Non-Hazardous)”; include package count, pallet count, and accurate total weight.
- Keep material clean and single-metal: no batteries, liquids, dirt, or mixed alloys. Bag small chips or turnings to prevent loss and reclass.
- Plan for heavy loads: request a forklift or liftgate, limit stack height to protect pallets, and note any 3,000+ lb pallets so terminals can stage equipment.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 55 rating delivers predictable LTL costs and lowers the risk of reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat fees and opens more carrier options across lanes.
- Packaged requirement reduces spill and contamination claims, cutting dwell time and cleanup exposure.
- Clear, NMFC-aligned descriptions speed quotes, invoicing, and recycler settlement cycles.
