How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State NMFC 110430 and “Lead Sheet, Packaged” on the BOL, include Class 60, piece count, and bundle dimensions for terminal planning.
- Band sheets tightly into bundles with steel or heavy poly strapping, use edge guards and top/bottom boards to prevent creasing of the soft metal.
- Wrap bundles in poly to contain surface residue and add non-abrasive interleaves if sheets are milled, laminated, or used for radiation shielding.
- Center heavy bundles on forklift tines, avoid overhang, and request liftgate or pallet jack service for job sites and hospital deliveries.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and avoids density reclass disputes and fees.
- High density means low cube per pound, often improving LTL cost efficiency.
- Rigid, well-banded packages reduce bend and edge-dent claims on soft lead sheets.
- Non-hazardous classification removes hazmat surcharges and streamlines paperwork.
