How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. State NMFC 110430 and “Lead Sheet, Packaged” on the BOL, include Class 60, piece count, and bundle dimensions for terminal planning.
  2. Band sheets tightly into bundles with steel or heavy poly strapping, use edge guards and top/bottom boards to prevent creasing of the soft metal.
  3. Wrap bundles in poly to contain surface residue and add non-abrasive interleaves if sheets are milled, laminated, or used for radiation shielding.
  4. Center heavy bundles on forklift tines, avoid overhang, and request liftgate or pallet jack service for job sites and hospital deliveries.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 simplifies quoting and avoids density reclass disputes and fees.
  • High density means low cube per pound, often improving LTL cost efficiency.
  • Rigid, well-banded packages reduce bend and edge-dent claims on soft lead sheets.
  • Non-hazardous classification removes hazmat surcharges and streamlines paperwork.
