How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- State the exact item on the BOL: “Weights, automobile wheel balancing, in boxes — NMFC 110480, Class 60, Non-hazardous.” Record only scale weight; no density needed.
- Use strong double-wall cartons and line with a poly bag to contain lead dust. Secure clip-on pieces so they do not puncture the box; keep adhesive strip weights separated with dividers.
- Palletize low and tight: interlock heavy boxes, add corner boards, strap and stretch-wrap. Keep cartons within the pallet footprint and cap with a top sheet for stable stacking.
- Mark any box over 50 lb as “Heavy.” For tire shops without docks, request liftgate pickup/delivery and note limited access to avoid delays and extra fees.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 delivers predictable LTL pricing and reduces reclass or reweigh disputes since the item is not density-based.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat paperwork and surcharges, shortening tender times and simplifying compliance.
- Dense lead parts packed in reinforced boxes cut damage risk, lowering claims and total landed cost on recurring replenishment orders.
- Clear, standardized descriptions speed carrier quoting and make it easy to consolidate multiple small boxes onto one pallet for better rate breaks.
