How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Write the BOL as: “NMFC 110500 – Sash Weights, Class 60,” and include the packaging type (e.g., 8 boxes) with accurate total weight to avoid reclass.
- Use double‑wall cartons or sturdy wood crates with a poly liner for dense lead weights. Keep individual containers 75–100 lb for safe handling and palletize on a 48×40 with bands.
- Distribute mass evenly and keep heavy pieces low. Add corner boards, stretch wrap, and two straps; mark Heavy and show forklift entry sides for dock crews.
- For reclaimed weights, line boxes to control dust and moisture, tape seams, and skip parcel services—LTL handles the density better and reduces damage risk.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 60 means predictable rating with no density calculation, minimizing billing disputes and reclass fees.
- High density, low cube freight often prices favorably—pay for weight, not wasted space—helping trim LTL spend versus bulkier metal items.
- Non‑hazardous status widens carrier choices and avoids hazmat surcharges, documentation, and service limitations.
- Clear packaging (boxes or crates) lowers claim exposure and speeds dock turns, boosting reliability for window makers, restorers, and salvage suppliers.
