How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack lead wool tightly in sturdy corrugated boxes; line with plastic to contain loose filaments and add dividers so coils don’t shift in transit.
  2. Palletize evenly: keep boxes within the 40x48 footprint, avoid overhang, and strap or stretch-wrap; for example, two 100 lb boxes on one pallet for 200 lb total.
  3. Note NMFC 110540 and Class 60 on the BOL; density data isn’t required, but include piece count and “non-hazardous lead product” for clear handling.
  4. If using drums or slatted reels, cap ends and block-and-brace to prevent rolling; request non-stack if reels could deform under load.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 60 rating simplifies quoting and cuts reclass risk, keeping LTL costs predictable.
  • Non-hazmat status avoids hazmat fees and carrier restrictions, expanding service options.
  • Box-friendly packaging curbs strand loss and damage, reducing claims and destination repack labor.
  • Single NMFC for multiple pack styles streamlines SOPs and speeds internal routing decisions.
