NMFC Description Class
110600.00 LEATHER OR LEATHERBOARD:

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Describe the item precisely on the BOL: e.g., “full‑grain leather sides, 5–6 oz, rolled, palletized” or “leatherboard sheets 48x96 in, interleaved, banded.”
  2. Protect surfaces and edges: roll hides flesh‑side in, wrap with kraft or poly, add corner boards, and strap firmly to 4‑way pallets to prevent scuffs and curl.
  3. Moisture matters: use top sheets and stretch wrap with desiccants for humid routes, and mark Keep Dry to avoid staining or warping of leatherboard.
  4. Plan handling and dimensions: avoid pallet overhang, cap height near 48–60 in to reduce crush risk, and provide exact piece count, bundle count, and weights to prevent reweighs.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Lower claim rates by preventing finish rub, edge damage, and moisture exposure—critical for upholstery, footwear, and automotive leather quality standards.
  • Accurate descriptions and clean labeling reduce reclass and inspection fees, speeding pickups and minimizing carrier exceptions.
  • Efficient palletization and secure bundling improve cube utilization and cross-dock flow, supporting better LTL rates and fewer handling touches.
  • Consistent protective packaging preserves color and texture lot-to-lot, keeping OEM schedules on track and reducing costly returns.
