Notes

Note 110682: NOTE-Blocks, squares or strips, other than bellies, heads or shoulders, of sole leather, in bundles, must be completely wrapped with burlap or strong paper; or bundles must have wooden boards on top and bottom securely bound with metal bands or wire.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Confirm the commodity fits NMFC 110680: rough leather bellies, shoulders, splits, sole leather cut stock, or transmission belting. Excludes kip and calfskin—note hide type on paperwork.
  2. Package per NMFC Notes 110682/110684: use sturdy cartons or crates with edge guards for sole cut stock; for rough hides, apply breathable kraft with a poly liner; palletize with no overhang and 4‑way entry.
  3. For belting, coil tightly and strap with non‑marring bands, add corner protection, and wrap to contain oils and prevent rub-off onto nearby freight. Use a moisture barrier for humid routes.
  4. Rate at Class 70 and include pallet dimensions and total weight on the BOL. If shipping original tannery shapes, label accordingly and list piece counts to speed inspections.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 70 eliminates density disputes, accelerating quotes and reducing reclass fees.
  • One listing covers bellies, splits, soles, and belting—simplifying BOL setup and minimizing delays from misclassification.
  • Compliance with packaging notes limits scuffing, warping, and oil transfer, lowering claim frequency and replacement costs.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and supports consolidation with general LTL, often improving lane rates.
