Notes
Note 110702: NOTE-Bundles or rolls, in shipments of less than 24,000 pounds, must be completely wrapped with burlap or strong paper. Rough or unfinished walrus leather may be shipped loose.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify your product fits NOI: confirm it’s leather or leatherboard not listed under a more specific NMFC and review Note 110702 for any exclusions or special cases.
- Package to prevent scuffing and moisture: use corrugated cartons or palletized bundles with interleaving sheets, edge guards, stretch wrap, and a moisture barrier; add ‘Do Not Top Load’ if panels could dent.
- List the class and description on the BOL: “Leather, NOI, NMFC 110700, in packages, Class 85,” and include piece count and packaging type for clear rating.
- For upholstery sides, belt blanks, or cut panels, strap bundles tightly to a flush 4‑way pallet with no overhang, and photograph packing to support claims.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: fixed Class 85 (non‑density) simplifies quoting and avoids density disputes on heavy leather shipments.
- Lower reclass risk: using the correct NOI item and packaging per the note reduces audits, rebills, and claim challenges.
- Faster operations: a single class for mixed leather pieces (panels, rolls, leatherboard) streamlines BOLs and consolidation.
- Cost control: non‑hazmat status and standard handling minimize accessorials compared with special commodity programs.
