How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Measure each package and compute density to select the right class. Example: 72 x 24 x 18 in at 420 lb = 420 / (72*24*18/1728) = 16.2 pcf, trending toward a lower class within 70-125.
  2. Palletize long runways and ramps on skids that match their length. Use blocking, edge protectors, and two straps minimum per piece to prevent bending and strap bite.
  3. Prep powered units: ship dry when possible, cap hydraulic ports, secure control boxes, and pad cylinders or motors. Mark This Side Up and keep the center of gravity over pallet stringers.
  4. On the BOL, state NMFC 111220 with description Lifts/Ramps/Runways, NOI, packaged. Include piece count, exact dims, weight, and stackability notes to avoid reweigh or reclass.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-based rating lets you lower costs by consolidating and shortening packages to raise pcf and trend toward the lower end of Class 70-125.
  • Accurate dimensions and packaging reduce reweighs, inspections, and unexpected accessorials, keeping quotes aligned with invoices.
  • Crated or well-palletized lifts and ramps experience fewer damages, fewer delays, and less OS&D hassle, improving delivery performance.
  • Clear NMFC identification and complete specs speed carrier rating in TMS systems, enabling faster approvals and more competitive freight rates.
