Notes
Note 111232: NOTE-Applies on materials regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a Hazard Class 2, Division 2.1, Flammable Gas, as defined in 49 CFR 173.115 and required to bear a notice to that effect on bills of lading and packaging.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use the density bracket to select a class between 70–250. Enter accurate box weights; if you know box cube, refine density for tighter rating.
- Declare HazMat correctly: Proper shipping name “Lighters,” UN1057, flammable gas. Apply Limited Quantity marks when eligible and book with HazMat-capable carriers.
- Pack lighters in strong boxes with inner trays or dividers. Lock ignition mechanisms, cap stems/nozzles, and prevent movement to avoid accidental spark or valve damage.
- Show NMFC 111230 on the BOL with box count and total weight, flag HazMat, and include a 24/7 emergency contact. Schedule pickup allowing for HazMat checks.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC and density rating cut reclass fees and minimize costly inspections or delays.
- Limited Quantity eligibility can reduce HazMat surcharges and expand carrier options for retail distribution.
- Tighter inner packaging increases density, which may lower the freight class and drive down LTL rates.
- Clear HazMat documentation decreases exception handling, speeding transit and protecting on-time delivery metrics.
