Classification Details

NMFC Description Class
111820.00 Lubricant, grease-binder (Lubricating Grease, other than petroleum lubricating grease, combined with fiber, not oiled waste), in inner containers in boxes, or in bulk in drums 65

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Pack the grease in sealed inner containers (pails, cartridges, or cans) and place them inside sturdy double-wall boxes lined with poly bags to prevent seepage. Palletize, shrink-wrap, and mark This Side Up.
  2. For bulk drums, ensure bungs and closures are tight, use rim clamps or drum rings on pallets, and add absorbent pads around lids. Example: 55-gal fibered grease drum banded to a four-way pallet.
  3. Limit heat exposure to reduce oil bleed and mess. Avoid high-temperature trailers in summer, and note colder-weather thickening so handling crews expect slower flow.
  4. On the BOL, describe: “Lubricant, grease-binder, non-petroleum, combined with fiber — NMFC 111820, Class 65.” Include “not oiled waste” to prevent misclassification.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Fixed Class 65 simplifies quoting and reduces reclass risk since density details are not required for this item type.
  • Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat fees and broadens carrier options, improving lane coverage and transit flexibility.
  • Proper boxed or drum packing minimizes leaks and cleanup charges, cutting claim costs and protecting on-time performance.
  • Accurate NMFC labeling speeds inspections and dock handling, reducing hold times and preventing surprise accessorials.
