How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm your commodity fits the Lumber Group (NMFC 112000), then locate the exact item number by species, finish, and packaging—e.g., rough cedar boards banded in bundles vs veneer sheets crated.
- Record true length extremes and bundle dimensions; 12–16 ft pieces often incur long-freight surcharges and may need carriers with long forks or special loading plans.
- Package for rigidity and moisture control: tight banding with edge protectors, dunnage and chocks for stability, flush ends, and moisture wrap for kiln‑dried lumber or veneer faces.
- Document clearly: label bundle counts and footage, mark “Do Not Top Load” for delicate veneer, note lift points, and request needed accessorials (appointments, tarp service) before tender.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Reduce reclass and inspection disputes by referencing the correct item within the Lumber Group instead of the group header.
- Lower damage rates on veneer and finished lumber with moisture-aware, reinforced packaging that protects edges and faces.
- Avoid surprise long-freight fees and secure sharper LTL or flatbed‑LTL pricing with precise lengths and handling notes.
- Speed dock turns and improve on-time performance through clear labels, handling marks, and accurate item-level NMFC documentation.
