How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Use NMFC 111870 for sight feed lubricating fluid packed in sealed inner containers placed inside sturdy boxes; rating is fixed at Class 70, no density break.
- Seal each bottle or can with caps and tamper bands, bag individually, and line the carton with an absorbent and poly liner to contain any seepage; mark ‘This Side Up’.
- Add dividers or molded inserts to stop movement and abrasion; choose at least 32 ECT or 275–350 lb burst cartons and tape seams with water-activated tape.
- Write the BOL clearly: 'Lubricating System Sight Feed Fluid, in inner containers, boxed — NMFC 111870, Class 70, non-hazardous' to prevent reclass delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 70—no density arguments or surprise reclass charges.
- Non-hazardous designation avoids hazmat surcharges and broadens carrier availability for LTL.
- Inner-container-in-box packaging reduces leak-related claims and OS&D, protecting margins and customer relationships.
- Clean, standard BOL wording speeds quotes and pickups, shortening order-to-ship cycles and improving cash flow.
