How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Unitize rough wooden parts tightly on pallets or in cribbed bundles; use edge protectors and 2–3 steel or polyester straps to prevent scuffing and slippage.
- List NMFC 112020 and “wood agricultural implement parts, in the rough — Class 50” on the BOL; do not mix in metal or finished components that could trigger a reclass.
- Control length to avoid overlength fees; note max piece length on paperwork and book carriers equipped for 8–12 ft lumber when shipping long blanks.
- Manage moisture: store under cover, use breathable wrap rather than tight shrink alone, and choose ISPM 15 pallets or dunnage for any export leg.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 50 delivers lower LTL rates for bulky, unfinished wood pieces.
- Non‑density classification speeds quoting and reduces reclass or billing disputes.
- Lumber‑style bundles are stackable and quick to handle, cutting dock time and accessorial risk.
- Predictable rating supports accurate budgeting for farm equipment parts programs and steady freight pricing.
