How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Quote at Class 65 and describe on the BOL as solid wood, tongue-and-groove, finished, 1/2 inch or greater, in boxes to avoid reclass disputes.
- Use heavy-duty cartons (double or triple wall for long planks), cap the ends, add edge protectors, and band boxed pieces to a pallet to prevent flex and corner crush.
- Flag overlength: note any boxed boards over 96 inches and select carriers that accept 108–120 inch freight, reducing surprise length fees and refusals.
- Protect finishes and joints: line boxes with poly or VCI paper against moisture, add foam spacers between tongues and grooves, and mark cartons Do Not Clamp.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with a fixed Class 65 rating—no density math and fewer rate swings for LTL quotes.
- Clear commodity definition (not flooring, not plywood/particleboard) lowers reclassification risk and billing corrections.
- Boxed packaging and palletized handling reduce edge chipping on finished T&G profiles, cutting claim frequency and downtime.
- Faster tendering for non-hazardous material streamlines bookings and helps secure capacity on construction timelines.
