How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Measure the longest edge; pieces must not exceed 18 inches. Exclude inlaid, parquet, or foam-backed squares to stay within this listing.
- State construction details on the BOL: paper-backed or reinforced with dowel pins/wood or metal splines. Example: “Wood flooring blocks, multi-piece, ≤18 in, paper-backed.”
- Bundle tightly and strap to 48×40 pallets with edge protectors. Keep faces flat, add a moisture barrier wrap, and avoid overhang to protect edges and corners.
- Because this is dimensions-based, provide exact pallet L×W×H and piece count. You don’t need density, but accurate cube drives correct LTL pricing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Precise NMFC alignment reduces reclass fees and inspection delays, keeping projects on schedule.
- Dimensions-based rating accelerates quoting and removes density guesswork for faster rate shopping.
- Square, well-bundled pallets stack efficiently, improving trailer utilization and lowering cost per unit.
- Moisture control and edge protection cut damage risk, minimizing claims and jobsite waste.
