How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Bundle rough or rough-turned pieces tightly with steel or heavy poly strapping; add wood dunnage and forklift openings. Example: band 20 rough-turned chair legs with end caps on a single bundle.
  2. Keep ends protected and moisture in check. Use corner guards and a top sheet (kraft or poly) to prevent denting and surface staining during LTL transfers.
  3. Label each package with piece count, species, and length. Print “NMFC 112600, Class 50” on the labels and BOL so terminals load and rate it correctly.
  4. Plan for length thresholds that trigger overlength fees (often 96–120 in). Consolidate into fewer, well-supported bundles and book carriers that accept long lumber.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Low, fixed Class 50 often lowers base LTL rates versus mid-class items, improving margin on bulk furniture components.
  • Clear ‘packages’ requirement means predictable rating with fewer reweighs and reclass disputes, reducing back charges and admin time.
  • Bundled stock moves faster across docks, cutting handling touches and damage risk—fewer claims and fewer delays for downstream machining.
  • Easy consolidation of multiple SKUs into one bundle trims minimum charges and pickup time, supporting smoother, lower-cost replenishment.
