How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Bundle rough or rough-turned pieces tightly with steel or heavy poly strapping; add wood dunnage and forklift openings. Example: band 20 rough-turned chair legs with end caps on a single bundle.
- Keep ends protected and moisture in check. Use corner guards and a top sheet (kraft or poly) to prevent denting and surface staining during LTL transfers.
- Label each package with piece count, species, and length. Print “NMFC 112600, Class 50” on the labels and BOL so terminals load and rate it correctly.
- Plan for length thresholds that trigger overlength fees (often 96–120 in). Consolidate into fewer, well-supported bundles and book carriers that accept long lumber.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Low, fixed Class 50 often lowers base LTL rates versus mid-class items, improving margin on bulk furniture components.
- Clear ‘packages’ requirement means predictable rating with fewer reweighs and reclass disputes, reducing back charges and admin time.
- Bundled stock moves faster across docks, cutting handling touches and damage risk—fewer claims and fewer delays for downstream machining.
- Easy consolidation of multiple SKUs into one bundle trims minimum charges and pickup time, supporting smoother, lower-cost replenishment.
