How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate shipment density before quoting: weigh the unit and measure pallet footprint and stack height. Example: 2,000 lb on 48x96 in at 36 in high ≈ 96 cu ft → 20.8 pcf.
- Package to Item 170: band bundles tightly, add corner/edge protectors, and use dunnage and stretch wrap so no loose boards or protruding ends remain.
- Group like lengths together and square the bundle. Mixed lengths or overhang increase risk and can trigger inspections; mark piece count and bundle size on the BOL.
- Protect faces from scuffing and moisture with top sheets or cover boards, and place runners for fork access to prevent breakage during handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate density mapping to NMFC 112870 secures the right class and lowers reclass/inspection fees.
- Stronger unitization reduces OS&D claims and keeps mill, cabinet, and prefab schedules on track.
- Clear NMFC reference speeds up carrier pricing and approvals, shortening quote-to-tender cycles.
- Optimized, full-height bundles improve trailer cube utilization and cut per-hundredweight costs.
