Notes
Note 112881: NOTE-Applies on wooden forms named such as are used in the manufacture of musical drum bodies or furniture pedestals.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Identify the exact wood product and packaging: boxes or crates for blocks, dowels, and staves; sealed containers for chips, shavings, or sawdust to prevent loss.
- Calculate density in lb/ft³: weigh the packed box or crate, measure external dimensions to find cubic feet, then select the density break under Item 170.
- Stabilize shipments: band survey stakes and staves into tight bundles, use liners for fine particles, and block crates to prevent movement or abrasion.
- Keep pallets homogeneous by density and item type—do not mix light match splints with heavy reel heads—to avoid reclass and damage.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower freight spend by increasing density where possible (e.g., compacting shavings) to qualify for a lower class.
- Reduce damage and cleanup fees by using leak-resistant packaging for chips, sawdust, and shingle tow.
- Avoid reweigh/reclass charges through accurate density calculations and clear NMFC 112880 labeling on BOLs.
- Simplify routing: one density-based item covers diverse lumber byproducts, easing vendor compliance and consolidation.
