How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Unitize similar lengths with stickers and robust steel or poly strapping; add corner protectors and mark bundle count and length on both ends.
  2. If creosoted, line contact surfaces with poly sheeting or linerboard to prevent stain and odor transfer; place absorbent pads beneath banding points.
  3. For 12–20 ft pieces, build dunnage runners to create forklift pockets and label lift points; request long-freight handling and note it on the BOL.
  4. Load ends inward and block bundles to stop rolling; avoid co-loading with food or textiles; list NMFC 113100, Class 50 on the BOL and note treated vs untreated.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Class 50 rating helps secure lower LTL rates on dense lumber posts compared with higher classes.
  • Simple, non-density classification cuts reclass risk and eliminates cube calculations, streamlining quotes and TMS setup.
  • Proper bundling and blocking reduce handling time, limit claims for scuffs or stain, and speed cross-dock transfers.
  • Clear treated/untreated disclosure and long-length notes prevent accessorial rebills and consignee refusals, protecting delivery timelines.
