How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Pack adjusters in sturdy cartons with partitions or foam to isolate arms, threads, and clevis ends; cap grease fittings and bag small parts to prevent abrasion.
- Palletize cartons on 40x48 GMA pallets, add corner boards, then strap and stretch-wrap; keep stack height under 48 inches to limit shift from dense iron/steel.
- Describe clearly on the BOL: “Adjusters, slack, wheel air brake, iron or steel, NOI, NMFC 114026, Class 60, in packages” and note “not railway equipment.”
- Avoid mixing with brake chambers or hoses that could reclassify the load; if shipping mixed auto brake components, separate by handling unit and label each.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable costs with fixed Class 60 rating—no density calculations, fewer reclass disputes, faster quotes.
- Non-hazardous metal parts reduce accessorials and training requirements, trimming total landed cost.
- Clear NMFC wording (“other than railway equipment”) lowers compliance risk and prevents costly misclassification.
- Durable iron/steel items tolerate efficient carton-and-pallet packing, cutting damage claims and downtime.
