How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the product qualifies: non-portable electrostatic or mechanical air cleaners with no built-in blower or fan, not fume/gas scrubbers and not roll-media types.
- Calculate density for classing. Measure L x W x H of the boxed or crated unit, convert to cubic feet, then divide weight by cube (e.g., 48x40x36 in = 40 cu ft; 400 lb/40 = 10 lb/ft³).
- Package to protect sensitive internals. Use anti-static wraps for electrostatic cells, rigid corner blocks, and foam-in-place or bracing to keep the core from shifting in crates.
- Label and handle correctly. Mark “Air Cleaner—No Blower” and “This Side Up,” strap to a pallet when possible, and avoid overhanging dimensions that inflate cube.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-driven rating lets you optimize packaging: tighter boxing or right-sized crating can improve density brackets and reduce freight spend.
- Clear qualification avoids reclass charges—excluding blower-equipped units and scrubbers prevents billing disputes and delays.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and reduces compliance overhead, helping bookings move faster through LTL networks.
- Damage reduction through proper bracing and ESD care cuts claim risk and downtime for facilities relying on clean-air machinery.
