How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Stabilize the attachment on heavy timbers or steel runners so forklifts can access from both sides; pad and strap claws, grapples, and sharp edges.
- Cap hydraulic ports and tie off hoses to the frame; relieve residual pressure and secure any moving arms or latch points before pickup.
- Mark the BOL as “loose iron/steel log loader attachment” and list overall length, width, and any protrusions; note center of gravity if off-center.
- Choose equipment wisely: LTL for compact units that fit dock handling, or flatbed/step deck when the attachment is oversized or unusually heavy.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate item match (NMFC 114225) helps prevent reclass charges and dispute delays on heavy iron attachments.
- Loose-handling guidance reduces dock time and the chance of accessorials like rehandling or detention.
- Proper blocking, edge protection, and port capping cut damage risk and downstream downtime in the yard or mill.
- Right-sizing service (LTL vs. flatbed) yields predictable freight rates and fewer handling exceptions for rugged equipment.
