How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density before booking: weigh the unit (including pallet or crate) and divide by cubic feet to select the correct density class from 70–150.
  2. Package to match handling risk: crate delicate controls and guard mixers, sheeters, or dividers; if shipping loose, bolt machinery to a skid and block-and-brace to prevent tipping.
  3. Remove or secure accessories such as bowls, guards, hoppers, and caster racks; pack these in a separate boxed or crated package and label it as part of the same shipment.
  4. Protect sanitary and electrical components: cap open ports, wrap food-contact surfaces, and lock out moving parts; use “Do Not Stack” cones for high center-of-gravity mixers.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Optimize freight spend with seven density breaks—tight packaging that raises density can drop the class and reduce LTL rates.
  • Flexible packing (boxes, crates, or secured loose) lets you balance damage prevention versus cost for different bakery machines and refurb units.
  • Accurate density data prevents carrier reclass fees and delays, keeping production lines or store openings on schedule.
  • Non-hazmat status streamlines carrier selection and transit planning, improving quote speed and capacity options.
