How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Confirm the correct subclass under item 114402 and list NMFC 114400 plus the packaging type (box, crate, or loose) on the BOL since it is not density-rated.
- If casters or wheels are installed, chock them and band the trough to a skid; when shipping loose, add 4x4 runners so forks clear the pan.
- Protect rims and seams with edge guards, then stretch-wrap and cover bare steel to reduce scuffs and flash rust during transit.
- Account for center-of-gravity when loading; request a liftgate only if necessary and confirm door height if legs or tall frames are attached.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating from a fixed 100-125 class range speeds quotes and billing without density disputes.
- Packaging choice (boxed, crated, or loose) aligns with subclasses, enabling the lowest applicable class and lowering LTL costs.
- Non-hazardous designation eliminates hazmat fees and shortens compliance steps for faster pickup and delivery.
- Improved blocking and rim protection reduce damage claims and downtime for bakeries, OEMs, and equipment refurbishers.
