How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packing by build: crate fully assembled floor models, box smaller countertop units, and only ship loose if banded to a pallet with moving parts secured.
- Remove bowls, whisks, and guards; wrap and box these separately to prevent abrasion. Cap electrical leads and protect control panels with rigid corner protectors.
- Block and brace heavy bases on skids using lag bolts or steel banding. Add shock indicators for high-speed mixers with delicate gearboxes.
- Note the non–density-based rating: dimensions won’t change the class (85–100), but they impact carrier choices and cubic minimum charges—plan pallet footprints accordingly.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Avoid reclass costs by matching packaging to the NMFC options (loose, boxes, crates) tied to the 85–100 class range.
- Reduce damage claims on precision mixers by crating assemblies and isolating attachments, preserving motor alignment and gear integrity.
- Quote faster with a fixed class range that isn’t density-driven, improving LTL pricing accuracy and transit planning.
- Leverage non-hazardous status to consolidate with other bakery equipment, increasing trailer utilization and lowering per-shipment costs.
