How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Empty, rinse, and cap all inlets/outlets. Drain pumps and secure valves; remove or lock any integrated scales or load cells before boxing or crating.
- Select packaging by size: bench-top tanks fit heavy-duty boxes with foam blocking; larger stainless tanks need wood crates with internal bracing and pump-guard blocks.
- Record the total shipping weight including pumps, frames, and fittings. Mark the BOL with NMFC 114550, Class 150 to reflect the weight-based rating.
- Mark center of gravity and “This Side Up.” Provide lift points and keep forklift tines clear of jackets, sight glasses, gauges, and pump housings.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable rating: Class 150 simplifies LTL quotes and reduces carrier reclass disputes for tanks with or without pumps.
- Boxed or crated packaging qualifies for standard handling, cutting accessorials tied to loose or irregular machinery.
- Single-item coverage for tank assemblies streamlines paperwork and minimizes missed accessory charges that inflate freight bills.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options, improving service levels and transit times without hazmat surcharges.
