How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select sturdy packaging by length and sharpness: double‑wall boxes for small blades, wooden crates for long cutter bars, and add edge guards or sheaths.
- Block and brace inside the box or crate so edges cannot pierce walls; use VCI paper or oil wrap to prevent corrosion during transit.
- Palletize securely: strap the boxed/crated parts to a pallet with no blade overhang, keep center of gravity low, and label “Sharp Edges—Do Not Stack.”
- List on the BOL as “Lawn mower cutter bars or blades, boxed/crated, NMFC 114740, Class 70, non-hazardous” with piece count and dimensions for quick quoting.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 70 means predictable LTL pricing without density calculations, simplifying quotes and budgeting.
- Proper boxing or crating reduces edge punctures and bending, lowering claim risk and rework costs.
- Accurate NMFC mapping avoids carrier reclass fees and delays, speeding up dock turns and deliveries.
- Non-hazardous status broadens carrier options and helps secure competitive rates during peak seasons.
