How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match packaging to the build: crate floor-standing warehouse mills, box compact bench units, and ship oversized hoppers loose on a skidded base with banding.
- Secure components before pickup—lock rotors, brace shafts, cap inlets/outlets, and bag small accessories like screens and sieves inside the main crate.
- Bolt the base to hardwood skids and mark lift points and center of gravity to guide forklifts and prevent tipping during LTL handling.
- Confirm the final class within the 100–150 range based on packaging and item condition, and note any attached motors or conveyors on the BOL.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Correctly selecting the class within 100–150 helps avoid reclass fees and inspection delays, keeping quotes accurate.
- Purpose-built crating reduces shock and moisture exposure, cutting claim risk for precision gearboxes and motors.
- Consolidating hoppers, guards, and spares with the main unit lowers handling units and can streamline accessorial charges.
- Non-hazardous machinery simplifies carrier acceptance and appointment scheduling, accelerating transit and dock turns.
