How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Book at Class 100 using NMFC 114940 and describe the commodity as an aggregate bin with elevator; no density calculation is required.
- Stabilize moving parts: lock out motors, strap conveyor belts and gates, cap any dust or material ports, and drain residual stone or gravel before pickup.
- Disassemble protruding pieces like ladders, guard rails, and discharge spouts; bolt them to the skid and match-mark components for quick reassembly.
- Lift from the base frame or manufacturer lift lugs, block hopper legs, mark center of gravity, and avoid rigging from belt housings or chute edges.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable LTL pricing with fixed Class 100 minimizes reclass fees and surprise accessorials.
- Reduced damage risk to belts, shafts, and chutes through targeted prep steps lowers repair and downtime costs.
- Faster quotes and dispatch because no density, weight tiers, or dimensional rules are needed for the classification.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines carrier approval and dispute resolution, improving billing accuracy and cash flow.
