How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List the unit as NMFC 114980 at Class 100 regardless of wheeled, skid-mounted, self-propelled, or tow-behind configuration—no density calculation required.
- Drain tanks and purge fuel lines; cap all ports and secure spray bars, hoses, and manifolds to prevent leaks and damage during LTL or flatbed moves.
- Stabilize the frame with blocking and bracing; fold booms, lock valves, and protect control panels with plywood sheathing or crating for impact resistance.
- For wheeled units, disable movement with chocks and straps; for skid units, band to a pallet or steel skid sized to the base footprint to allow forklift handling.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100 eliminates reclass fees and cuts quote time for asphalt application equipment.
- Broad coverage (wheeled or not, self-propelled or not) simplifies procurement across mixed fleets and models.
- Nonhazardous status expands carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges when equipment is drained and clean.
- No density rules means fewer inspections and billing disputes, improving transit reliability and budgeting.
