How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Match your unit to NMFC 115090 and note the subclass your carrier uses for power-operated, non-household recyclers; list the NMFC on the BOL to avoid reclass fees.
- If shipping loose, bolt the machine to a skid and block the base; lock doors, hoppers, and chutes, and cap electrical connections to prevent snags during forklift handling.
- For packages, crates, or boxes, pad protruding components (motors, sensors, conveyors) with foam and edge protectors; add tip-and-tell and “Do Not Stack” labels for tall units.
- Detach removable hoppers or control panels when possible to lower the center of gravity and footprint; photograph the packed unit before tendering for claim-ready documentation.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Accurate NMFC matching across a 70–300 class range prevents surprise reclass charges and keeps LTL quotes predictable.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges, accelerating pickup scheduling.
- Purposeful packaging (skid bolting, crating, bracing) reduces damage risk to motors and frames, cutting downtime costs for recycling operations.
- Right-sizing the load by removing attachments can drop the cubic footprint and access better density breaks, improving freight rates.
