How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Match your unit to NMFC 115090 and note the subclass your carrier uses for power-operated, non-household recyclers; list the NMFC on the BOL to avoid reclass fees.
  2. If shipping loose, bolt the machine to a skid and block the base; lock doors, hoppers, and chutes, and cap electrical connections to prevent snags during forklift handling.
  3. For packages, crates, or boxes, pad protruding components (motors, sensors, conveyors) with foam and edge protectors; add tip-and-tell and “Do Not Stack” labels for tall units.
  4. Detach removable hoppers or control panels when possible to lower the center of gravity and footprint; photograph the packed unit before tendering for claim-ready documentation.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Accurate NMFC matching across a 70–300 class range prevents surprise reclass charges and keeps LTL quotes predictable.
  • Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and eliminates hazmat surcharges, accelerating pickup scheduling.
  • Purposeful packaging (skid bolting, crating, bracing) reduces damage risk to motors and frames, cutting downtime costs for recycling operations.
  • Right-sizing the load by removing attachments can drop the cubic footprint and access better density breaks, improving freight rates.
