How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Select packaging to match the rating. This item carries two classes within 100–200; crating typically earns the lower class versus shipping loose.
- Build a rigid base: bolt the machine to a heavy skid, band the hopper and conveyors closed, cap hydraulic/pneumatic/electrical ports, and remove detachable discharge tubes to ride in the crate.
- Measure the full footprint including integral conveyors, separators/sorters, blowers, and any discharge tube. Flag overlength pieces and share center-of-gravity and lift points with the carrier.
- Protect critical components: guard the flattening chamber and motors, pad control panels, and wrap belts. For shop units, a 48x96 in skid often works; larger recycling models may require custom crating and rigging.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Lower landed cost by choosing the packaging that qualifies for the lower class within the 100–200 range and reduces base rate and FSC impact.
- Cut damage and claims by immobilizing moving parts and enclosing fragile controls—less downtime for MRFs and recycling plants.
- Avoid surprise accessorials by declaring overlength discharge tubes and liftgate or forklift needs up front, keeping invoices clean.
- Consolidate accessories—conveyors, sorters, blowers—into one crate to reduce handling fees, prevent shorts, and improve on-time performance.
