Notes
Note 115426: NOTE-Applies on lifting or suspension buckets, baskets, cages or platforms, without lifting mechanism, used for positioning personnel or materials to overhead work locations.
How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Calculate density before tendering: weight divided by cubic feet. Example: a 48×40×36 in cage at 300 lb = 40 cu ft, 7.5 pcf; select class per NMFC density breaks.
- Package per Item 170: bolt or band the metal basket to a sturdy pallet or skid, block lifting eyes and hooks, and protect rails/mesh with edge guards and stretch-wrap.
- Eliminate overhang and high center of gravity. Use dunnage inside the bucket, add corner posts or a light crate frame, and mark orientation with arrows and Do Not Fork zones.
- On the BOL, list NMFC 115425 with density and piece count, note any non-metal components (e.g., wood floors, rubber liners), and reference Note 115426 when applicable.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Density-based rating lets you lower freight class by right-sizing packaging, reducing empty space and cutting LTL cost.
- Standard “in packages” handling taps broader LTL capacity and avoids surcharges tied to loose or irregular machinery.
- Accurate density and Item 170 packaging minimize reclass/inspection fees and damage claims on high-value work platforms.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and speeds booking, improving dock-to-dock cycle time for construction and MRO fleets.
