How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Print NMFC 115500 and Class 85 on the BOL; describe as “Bulldozers, metalworking—machinery, non-hazardous,” and include unit serials or attachment IDs for traceability.
- Prepare the machine: drain fuel per carrier policy, cap hydraulic ports, pin or remove blade/ripper, and band loose steel guards to a skid or crate to prevent shift.
- Use heavy skids, blocking, and 4-point chain tie-downs with edge protection on blades and tracks; confirm working load limits exceed the dozer’s shipping weight.
- If the unit or attachment exceeds LTL dimensions, switch to flatbed or step-deck; otherwise, keep the footprint tight and dock-friendly to stay within Class 85.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 removes density math and reduces reclass risk, enabling faster, cleaner LTL quotes.
- Non-hazardous status widens carrier options and avoids hazmat surcharges, lowering total landed cost.
- Proper crating/skidding of steel components cuts damage claims on blades, rippers, and track frames.
- Clear NMFC mapping streamlines TMS rating and auditing, improving rate benchmarking and budgeting.
