How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the spec: iron or steel bushings without soft metal bearing surfaces; if a soft metal liner exists, use a different NMFC to avoid reclassification.
- Pack in sturdy cartons or small crates with dividers or trays; bag parts or use VCI paper to control oil and corrosion, and block ends so pieces can’t roll.
- Palletize multiple cartons in an interlocked pattern, add corner boards, and strap or stretch-wrap tightly; mark “Heavy Small Parts” to alert dock crews.
- On the BOL, list “Bushings, NOI, iron or steel, in packages — NMFC 115620, Class 65”; no density needed. Example: 8 cartons, 600 steel bushings, banded to 1 pallet.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 65 simplifies quoting and prevents density-based reclass fees on dense hardware.
- Non-hazardous status streamlines booking and avoids hazmat surcharges or special paperwork.
- Clear “in packages” requirement reduces damage risk, claims, and reship costs for repeat orders.
- Predictable rating supports annual contracts for OEMs, MRO suppliers, and distributors shipping bushings.
