Notes

Note 116031: NOTE-Unless otherwise provided in individual participating carriers' tariffs, articles moving under the provisions of item 116030 shall only be accepted subject to a maximum liability of $25.00 per pound. If shipper fails to declare a value, or declares a value in excess of $25.00 per pound, shipment will not be accepted, but if the shipment is inadvertently accepted, it will be considered as being released to a value not exceeding $25.00 per pound and the shipment will move subject to such limitation of liability. In no instance will carriers' liability exceed the actual value of the article lost or damaged.

How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Calculate density from total packaged size (include pallet, foam, and crate) and weight; use that pcf to select the proper class within the 50–400 scale.
  2. Note the value release on the BOL: “Released to $25/lb per NMFC 116030.” If higher coverage is needed, add separate cargo insurance rather than altering the class.
  3. Package electronics in double-wall boxes or sturdy crates (Packages 2253/2254/2286/2291). Use anti-static wrap, immobilize components, and block internal parts on ATMs and POS drawers.
  4. Unitize logically: keep computers, servers, and peripherals on one pallet under this item, list model counts, and use shock/tilt indicators for sensitive gear to reduce inspection delays.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Density-driven classes reward compact packaging, cutting LTL rates when you tighten crates and reduce void space around computers and servers.
  • One NMFC number covers ATMs, POS, and networking gear, simplifying quotes, paperwork, and reclass risks for mixed tech shipments.
  • Declared $25/lb release stabilizes liability expectations and helps avoid contentious claim disputes while allowing targeted insurance where it matters.
  • Electronics-focused packing reduces damages and downtime for banks, retailers, and IT deployments, protecting revenue and installation schedules.
