How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify condition before packing: serviceable units go boxed; loose shipping applies only to items valued for reconditioning or salvage.
- Protect optics and mechanisms. Cap lenses, secure film carriers and lamp housings, and wrap fragile parts with anti-static bubble or foam.
- Palletize boxed units for LTL. Use a sturdy 4-way pallet, add corner boards, band, and shrink-wrap; mark Fragile—Optics on two sides.
- Document clearly on the BOL: NMFC 116020, "Microfilm Machines/Viewers or Parts, NOI," Class 100, and note packaging (boxes or loose).
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 100 simplifies rating and budgeting across lanes.
- Loose option for salvage/reconditioning reduces packing time and expense for recyclers and refurbishers.
- Clear NMFC coding minimizes reclass fees and cuts claim risk when optics and moving parts are secured.
- Standardized handling improves consolidation with other machinery, speeding quotes and transit in LTL networks.
