How to Determine Your Class

To find the correct freight class for your shipment:

  1. Apply Class 100 for each unit when it’s secured in a rigid box or fully enclosed crate, and list NMFC 116120 on the BOL.
  2. Immobilize print heads, belts, and feeders; use transport locks or zip ties. Bag loose fasteners and include manuals in a document pouch.
  3. Use dense foam around the machine base and add skid runners on crates for forklift access; mark orientation and Do Not Stack if cabinets could deform.
  4. Remove or seal ink cartridges and trays on refurbished units, and photograph serial plates and condition before pickup to support claims.

Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.

Business Value

  • Predictable Class 100 rating streamlines quoting and reduces rate volatility for LTL shipments.
  • Proper boxing or crating minimizes reclass, overlength, and handling fees, lowering total landed cost.
  • Non-hazardous status broadens carrier choices and avoids hazmat surcharges and documentation delays.
  • Consistent classification simplifies multi-site rollouts, returns, and vendor drops for mailroom operations.
