How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Box each seal press with rigid internal bracing so the ram, handle, and base cannot shift; foam-in-place or cut lumber blocks work well for heavy steel frames.
- Protect machined faces and arbors with caps and rust inhibitor paper, then bag loose tooling or dies and label a parts pouch inside the box.
- Palletize the boxed unit when over 75 lb; center it on the pallet, add edge protectors, and use two straps in each direction to keep the box square.
- Quote and tender as NMFC 116170, Class 100; density does not change the class, but accurate outside box dimensions still drive LTL capacity and pricing.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 rating reduces reclass risk and unexpected billing, improving margin predictability on routine shop-tool shipments.
- Box-only prep streamlines packing workflows, enabling faster turnarounds and fewer accessorials compared with odd-shaped or bare machinery.
- Non-hazardous status simplifies paperwork and opens up more carrier options, often shortening tender-to-pickup timelines.
- Consistent coding (NMFC 116170) helps procurement benchmark carrier quotes and negotiate sharper LTL rates for recurring seal press moves.
