How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Verify the item is a carbonating machine only; ship any CO2 cylinders or gas supplies separately to keep the load non-hazardous.
- Choose packaging to match the unit: foam-lined double-wall carton for benchtop models, or custom wood crate with bolted skid and internal blocking for floor units.
- Prepare the machine: drain water/syrup, purge residual CO2, remove gauges or glass sight tubes, cap all ports, bag loose hardware, and mark lift points and center of gravity.
- Book as “Carbonating Machines, boxed/crated – Class 85,” then provide exact crate dimensions and weight, and request liftgate or limited access if your pickup/delivery requires it.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 85 delivers predictable quotes and avoids density disputes, speeding up rate shopping and approvals.
- Boxed/crated requirement reduces damage to valves, electronics, and stainless housings, lowering claim costs and downtime.
- Non-hazardous classification eliminates hazmat paperwork and surcharges, improving total landed cost and carrier options.
- Standard machinery handling improves dock flow and on-time installs for breweries, soda fountains, and sparkling water lines.
