How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- Clean and drain each unit; cap fuel inlets and vents, bag the carb to contain odors, and protect delicate choke and throttle linkages with foam collars.
- Choose packaging by shipment type: heavy double-wall box with foam cradle for single units, metal drum for bulk castings, or a crate built to NMFC Package 224 for fully assembled conversions.
- Palletize snugly: place boxed or crated units on a sturdy pallet, add corner posts, band and stretch-wrap, and mark arrows to prevent the float bowl side from taking top-load pressure.
- On paperwork, state NMFC 116480, Class 85, non-hazardous; include accurate counts, dimensions, and weight so carriers can route LTL without reclass or inspection delays.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Predictable pricing with fixed Class 85 makes rating and budgeting straightforward across carriers and lanes.
- Using NMFC-approved packaging (boxes, drums, or Package 224) lowers damage risk to gaskets, shafts, and linkages, cutting claim costs.
- Non-hazardous status avoids hazmat surcharges and simplifies terminal handling for quicker throughput.
- Right-size containers (single-unit boxes vs. consolidated drums/crates) reduce handling touches and can improve minimum charge utilization.
