How to Determine Your Class
To find the correct freight class for your shipment:
- List NMFC 116520 on the BOL for packaged feed or litter carrier cars or buckets; the fixed Class 100 applies regardless of density.
- Nest plastic buckets and bag or box them; add corner protectors and shrink wrap to keep stacks tight and prevent rim deformation.
- For wheeled feed carts, immobilize wheels with straps, remove loose handles if possible, and crate or box to stop shifting in transit.
- If shipping steel or galvanized units, pad sharp edges and hardware with foam or corrugate and use moisture-resistant wrap for barn-returned equipment.
Note: All classifications are subject to Item 170. Verify with official NMFC publications for the most current requirements.
Business Value
- Fixed Class 100 simplifies rating and avoids surprise reclasses, reducing billing disputes and accessorial delays.
- Efficient nesting and compact packaging cut cube, improving LTL freight rates and maximizing trailer space.
- Clear non-hazardous status streamlines carrier acceptance and speeds quotes for time-sensitive farm deliveries.
- Consistent treatment across plastic and steel designs standardizes your shipping playbook across product lines.
